Unlock your iPhone 5

How to unlock iPhone 5

You have got an iPhone 5 that you need to unlock, what are your options?

There are four methods for unlocking an iPhone 5, but of these only two are reliable and permanent.

Preferred iPhone 5 Unlock method

The simplest method for unlocking an iPhone 5 is called IMEI unlocking and can be performed online. All you need to do is provide your IMEI number which you can get by typing in *#06#

The only other thing you need to provide them is the current carrier or network that your iPhone 5 is connected to. If you are unsure which network you are connected to you can either remove your sim card to check, if you have one or use iPhone 5 network finder.

When you use the IMEI unlocking method this does not void your warranty and you do not have to download any dodgy software. It is all done online and is normally done within 24 to 48 hours.

Depending on your location the best iPhone 5 unlocking services are as follows.

If you are located in the UK we would recommend Official iPhone Unlock who on average unlock around 600+ iPhones every day. They are also rated by Trustmark Reviews as the number 1 in the category “Mobile Phone Unlocking” with current rating of 9.5

If you are located in the US, Canada or any other country we would recommend IPhoneIMEI who offer fast and reliable IMEI based unlocking.

Method 2 Software unlock

There are many software download online that you will come across that claim to unlock iPhones, but we have found none that work. Many you download will come with viruses and the like.

The only software we found to work, did not unlock the phone but did bypass the passcode on an iPhone, however you have to pay for full version $49.95 for one-year subscription or $349.95 for unlimited passcode unlocks.

Method 3

This method involves going directly to the network provider of your iPhone and asking them to unlock your phone. They will check to see you are not still in contract and that there are no outstanding payments on the phone. If you are not in contract with them you will need to find the name of the original owner. Depending on the network provider you will then pay an administration fee to get the phone unlocked and wait up to 20 days for it to be processed.

Method 4

This method involves you taking your iPhone 5 to a local phone shop where they would perform a hardware unlock. This has been known to work around 45% of the time, however you will void your warranty. There is no national chain we can recommend and loads of very dodgy operators that charge up to $100 to try and unlock. There are some services which offer No Fix No Fee, but would you want to risk your iPhone being damaged by these operators.

How to check if my iPhone 5 is unlocked

There are a number of ways you can check if your iPhone is locked to a carrier. The first is to simply call your carrier and ask them.

If you purchased your iPhone 5 directly from Apple it will be unlocked as they are not directly affiliated with any one network provider. If you purchased your phone from a carrier then it will probably ne locked to their network.

If you purchased your phone from a friend or online you could ask the previous owner who their carrier was.

Another simple method is to just insert 2 different sim cards from different networks and try calling. If they both work your phone is unlocked and you will be able to use any sim card in your phone.

Probably the simplest method is to use an online iPhone network checker to see what network the phone is on. These will be able to give you your answer instantly online, and you will need this information should you require your iPhone 5 unlocked.

Is iPhone unlocking legal?

The simple answer is Yes. It is completely legal to unlock your iPhone if you have completely paid for it. If you are still in contract it means that you don’t fully own the phone yet so you should check with your current carrier before you unlock the phone.
