How to Buy a Used iPhone

Guide to buying a used iPhone

iPhones are and always have been top of the range smartphones, an alternative and very often stylish option to the android choices. With those high quality pictures and efficient system the iPhone carries a hefty price. Buying one up front out of contract can easily cost around £700 for the iPhone 8. There are other options however. Sometimes a used phone can operate just as smoothly as a brand new one and can cost half the price. As long as you check out the quality of it first, you could find yourself grabbing quite a bargain.

Buying a used iPhone can also be a great way to replace one that you've broken or lost that didn't have any insurance. Becoming used to how iOS operates and then having to switch to Android can be annoying, so searching for any used deals can be the answer.

Quick Mobile Fix

Buying a used iPhone from any vendor that's not your mum or friend down the road can feel like a risky business. There are several different types of websites that will offer not only varying prices but a varied service as well. Quick Mobile Fix not only offer used phones for sale but also repair broken phones.

A iPhone 8 64GB from here will cost about £680 but the prices vary depending on the individual phone itself. With positive TrustPilot reviews, the website offers a monthly payment option if the full amount upfront is too expensive. The phone comes unlocked, refurbished and with a year warranty.

giffgaff

Moving away from websites specifically designed for selling and repairing phones, there are also mobile networks that sell used phones. giffgaff has a marketplace set up entirely for used phones and may be a reliable place to purchase a used phone.

A used iPhone 8 sells for £649 which can also be paid in monthly instalments. giffgaff gives you the option between a 'good' quality used iPhone or a 'very good' quality phone which will consequently impact how it looks and how it performs. Choosing the better quality will bump the price up by £100.

Gumtree, Amazon and Ebay

If you want to look for a cheaper option altogether, then heading to online marketplaces is your best option. This includes sites such as Ebay, Amazon and Gumtree. You will have to exercise more caution on these websites and ensure you read reviews of the individual vendor so that you can make sure you're purchasing a working used phone.

We compared the three websites and came up with the following results using the used iPhone 8 for all of them:

  • Gumtree: Prices range from £470 to £650
Either has to be collected from the vendor or pay for a separate courier service.
  • Amazon: Prices range from £599 to £653
Each phone has good reviews from previous customers. Though not available on Prime, both products offer free delivery with the phone.
  • Ebay: (Prices are for the Buy it Now option, though it is perfectly possible to grab a great deal by bidding on phones.) Prices range from £499 to £600.

Things to Consider

Depending on what model you choose, your iPhone may be able to operate at flashing speeds due to the LTE network. Be aware that iPhones older than 5 do not have this feature. Apple has a helpful list of what carriers offer LTE on the iPhone in each country.

To ensure that you're not purchasing a stolen phone, you can check the IMEI number which will tell you if the phone has been blocked. You can also use this to block your own phone if it has been stolen. Here's a tutorial on how to find your IMEI number on a iPhone. To ensure that you're not purchasing a phone that isn't compatible with your network, you can usually check with the mobile network themselves using the IMEI number you have located.

None of these websites allow you to see the phone before you buy it in person except for Gumtree. In this case, make sure you check for any damage that may impair the phone's performance or wasn't expressly stated in the ad. Things to look out for are:

  • Buttons and Touchscreen
  • Headphone Jack
  • Speakers
