I read in the paper that there was to be an exhibition of the "Treasures of Anglo-Saxon Northumbria" which would include the Lindisfarne Gospels, and resolved to go and see it. My original plan was to make a circular tour, Glasgow - Edinburgh - Newcastle - Carlisle - Glasgow, but I was told this was not possible on a return ticket (not true) and I had to settle for going back and forth via Edinburgh.

Anyway, it was worth the trip, not only did they have the Lindisfarne Gospels, they had several other old manuscripts originating from that area.

Afer viewing the exhibition, I had a wander round Newcastle and took a few photos.

Useful things, photies. I had completely forgotten about this trip until now. I left Glasgow by car at 07:30 (to miss the worst of the traffic) and arrived at Rowardennan at 08:42. It took about 2 hours to wander up the Ben (about 3.7 miles and 3100 feet of ascent, rather better than Naismith) and 1 hour 45 minutes to descend. I left Rowardennan at 13:05 and arrived at Balloch Pier at 13:45, took some photos of the Maid, left at 14:08 and was home at 14:58.

Pitlochry — from Friday, 30 May 1997

Some members of the Compuserve Outdoors forum arranged a weekend outing to Pitlochry to ascend Beinn a'Ghlo and I decided to tag along.

Day 0 - Friday, May 30 — I caught a Glasgow - Aberdeen bus at 14:45 from the bus station, �11.00 return to Pitlochry. We passed through Cumbernauld (15:05 - 15:07) and Stirling (15:26 - 15:29) before arriving at Perth at 16:14 where I got off and changed to an Edinburgh - Inverness bus departing at 16:49 and arriving at Pitlochry at 17:28. I bought some Banana Boat sunscreen before boking in to the Youth Hostel for one night (�7.35). I dined on a fish supper (�2.70) and had a look at the Faskally Dam before heading to the pub to meet the others.

Day 1 - Saturday, June 1 — I got a lift from the car park at 08:57 and we were in Blair Atholl at 09:11. We set off at 09:20 and split into two parties - the younger, fitter folk going over Beinn a'Ghlo while the wimps (and I have to confess I was one of them) continued through Glen Tilt, pausing at Marble Lodge (4.25 miles, 10:55 - 11:20) and Forest Lodge (12:25 - 13:30) before arriving in the vicinity of the designated meeting point at the far end at 15:00. And there, there was a problem. We had to cross the River Tilt. There was a "bridge" - two wires, one above the other, about four feet apart. There was much discussion as to whether we could manage it with our packs before we decide to take our boots off and ford the river. Finally, we set up camp on the banks of An Dochain (982783) at 15:50 where the others arrived about an hour later.

Day 2 - Sunday, June 2 — The rest of the group were heading back to Blair Atholl and their cars, while I set of direct for Pitlochry, leaving the camp site at 08:40 and passing over Meall an Daimh at 15:32 and Ben Vrackie (841m) at 16:15 before reaching Pitlochry at 18:00, just in time for a quick wash in the public conveniences before the bus at 18:14. After a change at Perth (18:55 - 19:02), we passed through Stirling (19:48 - 19:52) and Cumbernauld (20:10 - 20:11) before arriving in Glasgow at 20:28.
