What Is Glass Fibre Roofing

Glass Fibre Roofing, also known as Glass Reinforced Plastic roofing, is one of the most popular roofing solutions for new builds and previously built homes. It is created using a three-step process over the space of 24 hours, which makes it a quick solution when compared to roof tiles.

Glass Fibre Roofing is created using a polyester resin and matting made of glass fibres. This is then protected with a top coat for added strength. The result is a very strong, durable laminate which can endure years of general wear and tear. This means that once installed correctly, glass fibre roofing is virtually maintenance free and cannot shift like roof tiles in windy conditions.

A Waterproof Finish
Once fitted, the material is also waterproof. The roofing is created using the same products and production methods as the body of a yacht. It can be painted, much like a yacht hull to suit your structural design. This is particularly effective when painted grey or black to suit a contemporary design.
Of course, waterproof materials add another element to structural design. As well as keeping your building dry and protected from the elements, it also lends itself well to design features, providing the base to rooftop terraces and living roofs. Plants can be added to the roof and watered without the water compromising the structure of the building or damaging the roof surface. Careful planting can provide you with year-round colour which sets your building apart from those around it.
Adding Extra Space to your Home
Alternatively, a roof terrace can be made which can support the weight of people walking on the flat roof. This not only adds extra space to the home, allowing you to entertain friends and family in warmer weather, but also makes cleaning the roof area simple. Glass fibre roofing can be cleaned using a pressure washer if preferred, although a bucket of water and a mop is just as effective. When wet glass fibre roofing has a non-slip surface, meaning there is no danger of falling off while maintaining the roof's appearance.
Improving Energy Efficiency
One of the most exciting qualities of glass fibre roofing is its ability to regulate the building's temperature, improving the energy efficiency of the home and reducing fuel bills. If installed correctly there may be little requirement for air conditioning or heating in this area of the home.
The Installation Process
It's important to lay glass fibre roofing in the correct weather conditions for optimum performance. Glass fibre roofing needs to be cured to make it watertight, and the resin used to cure the material must be laid in dry weather conditions. Excess heat or cold can make the resin difficult to set.
The laying process involves fitting OSB boards to the roof. These are then covered with a base resin which is made up of a plastic and a catalyst. This is applied to the corners of the boards first, with an edge trim around the borders of the roof to protect the board edges. A chopped mat is cut and laid on top of the resin. This is made of glass strands which create a very strong surface. Resin is again applied to create a top coat which adds extra strength and waterproofs the roof. This must be applied within 24 hours of the matting being laid.
