Accessible Things to do in Wales
Steps, narrow corridors and slippery surfaces in tourist attractions can make it difficult for a disabled person to plan a day out with able bodied family and friends.
Bodelwyddan Castle and Park
The ground and first floors of the National Portrait Gallery based in Bodelwyddan Castle are fully accessible for people in wheelchairs. The site also offers the hire of wheelchairs, braille transcriptions and tours of textile artefact’s and audio tours.
Clwyd Special Riding Centre
This equestrian riding facility based in Clwyd is ran by volunteers. The site offers holidays and days out and specialises in adapted riding lessons, carriage driving and equestrian vaulting.
Llyn Brenig
If you prefer a quiet afternoon of trout fishing amongst beautiful scenery, then the wheelchair accessible ’wheelyboat’ hire service may be for you. The site also offers a café serving a range of food with panoramic views of the reservoir.
Pedal Power
Based in Wrexham, Pedal Power is a project offering adapted bicycles, tricycles and tandems for those with disabilities. There is a training area, a safe mile long circuit and a wheelchair friendly sculpture trail to be seen.
Snowdon
Though not particularly someone’s first thought for accessibility there are a wide range of activities available at Mount Snowdon for those with impairments. The Snowdon Mountain Railway has carriages fit for wheelchair access and station facilities available for help boarding the train. There is also a mountain biking company called SnowBikers who provide coaching and tandem bikes for those with Visual Impairments who wish to take on the challenging MinoTaur trail. There are also audio guides provided by the North Wales Society for the Blind for the Mawddach Trail.
Beaches
Weather permitting many of the Welsh beaches have fully accessible changing rooms and restrooms readily available.360 Beach and Water sports based in Swansea also offers activities for those with disabilities and to help people warm up afterwards has a fully licensed café bar.
Celtic Quest Coasteering
Coasteering is a rock pooling adventure. Whilst there are some extreme activities such as cliff diving advertised by Celtic Quest, their main belief is the experience should be open to everybody, and they can customise tours and activities for people with all abilities.
