Security for People with Disabilities
When a person without a disability thinks of security, they think of remembering to set the alarm, locking the door and ensuring windows are closed. For people with an impairment they have many more things that they need to remember and be aware of.
Safety Alarms
Personal alarms can be kept on their person, which can be triggered manually if a person is able, or automatically if fitted with a fall sensor. Either a smart phone or monitor will then alert a contactable person either a specialist company or a family member or friend to check on the person. Some of these alarms, made specifically for those with memory problems can be fitted with GPS so that a carer or family member can find them if they become confused and leave the home. Fall mats and bed rails can be in place for people with mobility issues who find it hard to get back up.
Emergency Alarms
In case of an emergency, it is a good idea for those especially with a hearing impairment to have fire and carbon monoxide alarms fitted with flashing beacons as well as a loud sound to help get people outside of a building faster.
Access to the Property
If someone finds it hard to move their hands to turn a key or open the door, there are several options available. If the property needs to be accessed regularly by others, such as care assistants or support workers, it may be an idea to install a key safe on the outside wall of the property. These safes contain a customised keycode so that designated people can access the key in order to get into the home. Other options available are the use of electronic key fobs, like hotel keys, which can allow access into the home.
Home Security
Elderly people and disabled people are incredibly vulnerable making them a target for crime. Most buildings with appropriate access are single story meaning that they are easier to break into. It is also easier for a potential robber to be able to gain entry to a home by force or by pretending to be an official. Intercom systems both audible and visible make it easier to protect vulnerable people.
