Forth and Clyde Canal — from Thursday, 6 September 2001

I left Shettleston by train (320320) at 10:02 and got off at Bowling (£2.80 single) at 10:40, having been joined by Ronnie at Queen Street. We skirted the edge of the harbour to reach the canal basin, I took a photo and we set off at 11:00. At Lock 27 (Temple), we stopped for lunch (13:23 - 13:57) then continued at pass Stockingfield Junction 14:25 and arrive at Port Dundas at 15:11. We repaired to the Station bar for restorative refreshment and I caught the bus home at about six o'clock.

A few days later, on Tuesday, September 11, I decided to continue the walk (on my own) and took the bus into town, walked up to Port Dundas and set off from there at 09:35, passed Stockingfield Junction at 10:20 and stopped for lunch (split pea soup & a pint of Velvet, £4.85) at The Stables, Glasgow Bridge (11:53 - 12:30) before reaching Kirkintilloch at 13:00. From there, I walked on to reach Lock 20 at Wyndford at 15:40 and, after a short pause, deserted the canal to arrive at the Hollandbush Inn at Banknock (18.5 miles from Port Dundas).

When I went in, I glanced at the television and thought it was showing a film, Towering Inferno perhaps. I went to the bar, a local bought me a pint (kind man), I sat down and looked again at the TV and realised it was no film, it was coming live from New York and I was watching the destruction of the Twin Towers. I bought another pint (Belhaven Light, £1.64, the local refused a return) and watched some more depressing footage.

I emerged and caught the bus at 16:54, passing Kilsyth (17:02) and Kirkintilloch (17:15) to arrive at Buchanan Bus Station at 17:42 (£2.90).

Having nothing better to do, I decided to continue with the Forth and Clyde Canal and caught a bus from Buchanan Street at 08:38, passing Kirkintilloch (09:05), Kilsyth (09:19) and Banton to arrive at Banknock at 09:29 (£2.90). Straight down to Wyndford and east along the canal, passing the new Falkirk Wheel en route through Falkirk and down to the new Carron Sea Lock (12:26. 10 miles from Wyndford) which restores access to the Firth of Forth. After 5 minutes, I returned by the same route through Falkirk to Camelon (13:32) where I stopped for a small refreshment at Lock 16 (lentil soup (£1.95) and a pint of Velvet (£1.85)) before ascending at 14:05 by the line of the old locks to the Union Canal and along to Falkirk High station arriving there at 15:22 (16.5 miles for the day). The next train (170418) at 15:45 carried me to Queen Street at 16:08 (£4.40 single). There was time for a pint of Orkney Dark (£2.15) in the Auctioneers before catching the bus home.

The Union Canal — Friday, 7 November 2003

I decided that it was time for a wee walk and took the train from Shettleston (320315, £8.60 cheap day return) at 09:14, changing at Queen Street (09:23 - 09:46, 170410) to arrive at Linlithgow at 10:19. I set off at a leisurely pace along the Union Canal at 10:28 and arrived at the Falkirk Wheel at 14:42 where I had a look around and partook of tea and a ham & cheese sandwich before continuing at 16:10, returning by the Forth and Clyde Canal to Lock 16 (Camelon) at 16:35 where I indulged in my more usual refreshment in the Union Inn. At 17:42, it was up the line of the old locks for the short distance along the Union Canal to Falkirk High station at 18:11. The next train (170404) left at 18:31, I changed at Queen Street (18:51 - 19:28) to 320305 and arrived at Shettleston at 19:37.
