The Family of John Connolly & Helen Benson, 1842

This is the family of Ellen Connolly who married William Reynolds in 1890.

From the Register of Marriages at the Catholic Chapel [St Andrew's], Dundee

1842 March 27 [Sunday]

"John Connolly and Helen Benson were after due proclamation married by me at Dundee on the twenty seventh day of March one thousand eight hundred and forty two in presence of James Michan and Ann MacLuskie. Stephen Keenan"

John and Helen had the following children (that I know of) —

Margaretborn in Glasgow about 1843, married Anthony Richard in 1863.
Edwardborn in Glasgow about 1845, married Sarah Richard in 1866.
Daniel (1)born in Glasgow about 1846 and died between 1851 and 1855 (probably).
Maryborn in Shettleston in 1850, married Edward Watson in 1871.
John (1)born in Shettleston in 1853 and died before 1857 (probably).
Ellenborn in Shettleston in 1854, married (1) Thomas Dobbin in 1881, (2) William Reynolds in 1890
and died in 1901.
John (2)born in Shettleston in 1857, last sighting 1871.
Daniel (2)born in Shettleston in 1860 and died in 1864.
Bridgetborn in Shettleston in 1863 and died in 1864.
Michaelborn in Shettleston in 1865, married Janet Hayes in 1888.

1850 Mary, lawful child of John Conolly and Helen Benson was about 7 weeks old when she was baptised on June 7 in the parish of St Mary's, Abercromby Street, Glasgow by Fr. James Forbes with sponsor Catherine Heart. Later census records suggest she was born in Sandyhills, Shettleston.

1851 March 30 The following household dwelt at Buchanan Square in the Village of Sandyhills in the Parish of Shettleston.

1853 John, lawful child of John Connelly and Ellen Benson (Catholics) was born on Thursday, April 7 and baptised on April 24 in the parish of St Paul's, Eastmuir by Fr Eugene Small with sponsors Thomas Graham and Bridget Graham.

Since another John was born in 1857, I think we can assume this child died before then. There is no death registered in Shettleston so it is likely that he died before 1855.

1854 Ellen, lawful child of John Connelly and Ellen Benston (Catholics) was born on Monday, August 7 and baptised by Fr Patrick McLaughlin on August 27 in the parish of St Paul's, Eastmuir with sponsors Neil Ward and Ann McCawley.

1855 John and Ellen were the sponsors at the baptism of Patrick, lawful child of Neil Ward and Ann McCawley on February 2 in St Paul's, Eastmuir.

1857 John Connally was born at 11h0m a.m. on Thursday, May 21 at Sandyhills, Shettleston, Lanark to John Connally, Coal Miner and Helen Connally m.s. Benston. His birth was registered No.117 at Shettleston on May 30 by John Connally, "his X mark", Father, Not present.

He was baptised by Fr Patrick McLaughlin on June 14 in the parish of St Paul's, Eastmuir with sponsors Patrick Reynolds and Ellen Connelly.

1860 Daniel Connelly was born at 10h30m p.m. on Thursday, July 19 at Sandyhills, Shettleston, Lanark to John Connelly, Coal Miner and Helen Connelly m.s. Benson. His birth was registered No.155 at Shettleston on July 27 by John Connelly, "his X mark", Father, Not Present.

He was baptised by Fr Patrick McLaughlin in the parish of St Paul's, Eastmuir on August 10 with sponsor Ellen Connelly. [I wonder if this Ellen is Mrs Reynolds, as it is unlikely to be Daniel's 5-year-old sister.]

I think we can assume that the first Daniel has died, probably before 1855 as there is no appropriate death registered in Shettleston from that year on. Unfortunately, this Daniel also died young, in January 1864.

1860 On Thursday, October 11, a Margaret Connelly was witness to the marriage of Henry McGee of Lightburn and Margaret Burns of Eastmuir. In the 1861 Census, these McGees were living next door to the Connollys.

1861 April 8 The following household dwelt at Sandyhills Square, Shettleston in a house with one windowed room. It would seem that Buchanan Square has been renamed.

1863 Bridget was born at 5h0m a.m. on Monday, May 4 at Sandyhills, Shettleston, Lanark to John Connelly, Coal Miner and Helen Connelly m.s. Benson who married in Dundee in 1841. Her birth was registered No.99 at Shettleston on May 12 by John Connelly, "his X mark", Father.

She was baptised on June 1 by Fr Patrick McLaughlin in the parish of St Paul's, Eastmuir with sponsor Ellen Cunningham.

Sadly, Bridget lived only 8 months and died on January 18, 1864.

1863 On Monday, August 3, Margaret married Anthony Richard at Eastmuir, Shettleston After Banns According to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.36 at Shettleston on August 5.

Anthony was a Bachelor, aged 24, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Sandyhills, Shettleston Parish. His parents are recorded as Edward Richard, Farm Labourer, Deceased and Catherine Richard m.s. Burrel.

Margaret was a Spinster, aged 21, no occupation given and usual residence Sandyhills, Shettleston Parish. Her parents are recorded as John Connelly, Coal Miner and Helen Connelly m.s. Benson.

The celebrant was P. McLaughlin, Pastor of St. Paul's Rom. Cath. Church, Eastmuir and the witnesses were Edward Connelly [Margaret's brother] and Ann Woods.

The marriage is also recorded in the register of St Paul's, Eastmuir —

"Anthony Richard & Margaret Connelly, after due proclamation of Banns, were married by me in the presence of Edward Connelly and Ann Woods. Patrick McLaughlin."

1864 Daniel Connelly, Single, died at 5h30m a.m. on Saturday, January 9 at Sandyhills, Shettleston, aged 3½ years, of Scarlet Fever, 9 days, as certified by George Willis, Surgeon. His death was registered No.5 at Shettleston on the same day by Edward Connelly, Brother, Present.

There is an entry in the records of St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth - Internments in Common Ground on January 10 for the burial of Daniel Connoly, aged 3 years, cause of death Scarlet Fever and a fee of two shillings.

1864 Bridget Connelly, Single, died at 10h0m a.m. on Monday, January 18 at Sandyhills, Shettleston, Lanark aged 8 months, of Scarlet Fever after five weeks (or possibly two), as certified by George Willis, Surgeon. Her death was registered No.13 at Shettleston on the same day by John Connelly, "his X mark", Father, Present.

1865 Michael Connelly was born at 10h0m a.m. on Friday, October 13 at Sandyhills, Shettleston, Lanark to John Connelly, Coal Miner and Helen Connelly m.s. Benson who married on April 27 [only one month out], 1842 in Dundee. His birth was registered No.210 at Shettleston on October 20 by John Connelly, "his X mark", Father.

He was baptised by Fr Patrick McLaughlin in the parish of St Paul's, Eastmuir on October 26 with sponsor Ellen Meehan.

1866 On Thursday, November 29, Edward Connelly and Sarah Richard were married at Eastmuir, Shettleston After Banns According to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. [See Section CN-6-1 for further information.]

1866 Anthony Richard and Margaret Connelly were sponsors at the baptism of Michael, lawful child of John McLaughlin and Mary Hughes, who was born on September 29 and baptised on October 14 by Fr Patrick McLaughlin in the parish of St Paul's, Eastmuir. I didn't notice baptisms for any children born to Anthony and Margaret.

1869 John Connelly, Coal Miner, Married to Helen Benson, died at 5h15m a.m. on Wednesday, December 22, aged 47 years, killed in No.9 Coal Pit at Sandyhills, Shettleston, Lanark, not certified. His parents are recorded as Edward Connelly, Carrier and Margaret Connelly m.s. Hargaton [as near as I could read it], both deceased. His death was registered No.158 at Shettleston on December 24 by Edward Connelly, Son, residing in Sandyhills.

There is an entry in the Register of Corrected Entries for the District of Shettleston in the County of Lanark, Volume 1, Page 57 as follows:-

"Transmission of result of Precognition after the Registration of a death in the ordinary way. The following report of result of Precognition has been received touching the Death of John Connelly registered under No.158 in the Registration Book of Deaths for the year 1869

Andrew Garrand, Registrar, Shettleston, 14 April 1870.

On December 23, John's death merited a small paragraph on Page 4 (at the bottom of the second column) of the Glasgow Daily Herald.

"Fatal Coal Pit Accident — Yesterday morning, a collier named Connelly, residing at Sandyhills Square, Shettleston, was instantaneously deprived of life in No.9 Pit, Mount Vernon, by a portion of the roof falling upon him." [Sic transit....]

There is an entry in the records of St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth for December 25 of the burial of John Connelly, aged 47 years, in Lair 98, Section 4E (Title No.715), cause of death - Killed. He is stated to be the husband of the owner of the lair. The grave was opened to a depth of 8ft and a fee of 6/- was charged.

In Dan McAleer's memoir, written in 1930 about the 1870s, he says of Sandyhills Pit:-

"No.9 had a large output of coal but it was troubled with very much water. It was well equipped with pumping engine and three boilers although it was very expensive firing, it was successful."

The pit closed before 1896.

1871 On Thursday, February 16, Mary Connelly married Edward Watson at Eastmuir, Shettleston After Banns According to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. [See Section WS-6-1 for further information.]

I have found no trace of Margaret and Anthony Richard, or the rest of his family in the east end of Shettleston.

1880 On Sunday, October 3, Helen Benson or Connolly and John McMachan were married before Fr. G. McBrearty at Eastmuir RC Chapel After Publication According to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.47 at Shettleston on October 6.

John was a Widower, gave his age as 48, occupation General Labourer and usual address Law's Row, Shettleston, Lanark. His parents are recorded as Owen McMachan, Mason and Catherine McMachan m.s. Hughes, both deceased.

Helen was a Widow, gave her age as 50 and usual address as Eastmuir, Shettleston, Lanark. Her parents are recorded as Michael Benson, General Labourer and Mary Benson m.s. Muir [Colvin on her death certificate], both deceased.

The witnesses were John McGuinness and Mary Barret.

The marriage is recorded in the Register of Marriages in St Paul's with witnesses John McGuines and Mrs Mary Barret.

1881 April 3 At 120 Eastmuir Street, in a house with two windowed rooms, there dwelt —

Note that John's surname has changed from McMachan to McMahon. I'll have a look sometime to see if I can find him in the 1871 census and under which name.

I have no explanation for this Thomas, I would have expected to find Michael aged 15. There were a couple of Thomas Connellys born in Shettleston in 1863 but their parents have no place in the scheme of things. For the time being, I will assume that this is Michael.

There are a few John Connellys scattered around with nothing to identify which belongs to this family.

Edward and Sarah [m.s. Richard], now with six children, were living at 132 Eastmuir Street in a house with two windowed rooms while at 134 Eastmuir Street, Mary and Edward Watson with four children dwelt in a house with two windowed rooms.

1881 On Monday, August 29, Ellen Connelly married Thomas Dobbin at St. Paul's RC Church, Eastmuir, Shettleston. [see Section DB-6-1 for further information.]

1881 Helen McMahon, married 1st to John Connelly, Coal Miner; 2nd to John McMahon, Quarryman, died at 10h0m p.m. on December 19, aged 53 [it says] at Eastmuir, Shettleston, Lanark of Cardiac Disease as certified by Wm. M. Willis, MBChB. Her parents are recorded as Michael Benson, Labourer and Mary Benson m.s. Colvin [or possibly Colorn, but it was Muir on her second marriage certificate]. Her death was registered No.182 at Shettleston on the following day by Edward Watson, "Son and lay", residing at Eastmuir, Shettleston.

The informant himself wrote the relationship. I can imagine a wry smile on the face of the veteran registrar, Andrew Garrand.

There is an entry in the records of St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth on December 21 for the burial of Mrs John McMahon, age 53, cause of death Heart disease. She was buried in Lair 98, Section 4E (Title No.715) alongside her first husband John Connelly.

1888 On Thursday, April 26, Michael Connolly and Janet Hayes were married by Fr. Joseph van Hecke at St. Paul's RC Church, Shettleston after Publication According to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No. 28 at Shettleston on April 30.

Michael was a Bachelor, age 22, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Eastmuir Street, Shettleston. His parents are recorded as John Connolly, Coal Miner and Ellen Connolly m.s. Benson, both deceased.

Janet was a Spinster, age 20, occupation Ropery Worker and usual residence 114 Eastmuir Street, Shettleston. Her parents are recorded as James Hayes, Coal Miner (deceased) and Ellen Hayes m.s. Hooks.

The witnesses were John Hayes and Sarah McGee. [I don't know how many Sarah McGees there were in Shettleston at that time but one was the 23 year old daughter of Henry and Margaret (nee Burns) McGee. Henry and Margaret had lived next door to the Connellys in Sandyhills in the 1860s, and had a Margaret Connelly as a witness to their marriage.]

1889 Thomas Dobbin, Mason (Journeyman), married to Ellen Connolly, died on June 22.

1890 On Friday, July 18, Ellen Connolly or Dobbin, Widow, married William Reynolds, Widower at St. Paul's RC Church, Shettleston. [See Section RS-6-2 for further information.]
