Henry McGee was born about 1837 in the Parish of Shettleston to Sarah Dunigan (c1810 - 1888) and James McGee (c1810 - 1885). [See Section MG-5-1 for family background.]
Margaret Burns was born about 1835 in Ireland to Sarah Milligan and Michael Burns. There is a slight but diminishing possibility that her surname was Binns.
Their known children are
Sarah (1) born in 1862 and died young. Margaret born in 1863 in Baillieston, last sighting 1881. Sarah (2) born in 1865 in Baillieston, last sighting 1881. James born in 1868 in Baillieston, last sighting 1881. Helen born in 1870 in Hamilton (or thereabouts), last sighting 1891. Annie born in 1872 in Hamilton (or thereabouts), married Patrick Sheridan, last sighting 1901.
1860 On Thursday, October 11, Henry and Margaret were married by Fr. P. McLaughlin, Pastor of St. Paul's RC Church at Eastmuir, Shettleston. The marriage was registered No.30 at Shettleston on the following day. [I had some difficulty finding this record as the surname for Henry and his parents is spelt "Maghee"!.]
Henry was a Bachelor, he gave his age as 25 [he might have been 23], occupation Labourer and usual residence Lightburn, Shettleston Parish. His parents are recorded as James Maghee, Labourer and Sarah Maghee m.s. Dunigan.
Margaret was a Spinster, also aged 25, occupation OutdoorWorker and usual residence Eastmuir, Shettleston Parish. Her parents are recorded as Michael Burns, Labourer, deceased and Sarah Burns m.s. Milligan.
The witnesses were Thos Dunigan [possibly a cousin of Henry] and Margaret Connelly [probably Margaret's next door neighbour].
The marriage is also recorded in the register of St Paul's, Eastmuir
"Henry McGee & Margaret Burns, after due proclamation of Banns, were married by me in the presence of Thomas Dunigan and Margaret Connelly. Patrick McLaughlin."
1861 April 8 Henry and Margaret were living at Sandyhills Square (being two rows of workmen's houses) in a house in which one room had one or more windows. The household is listed as
Rel. Mar. Age Occupation Birthplace Henry McGhee Head Mar. 23 Coal Miner Lanarkshire, Shettleston Margaret do. Wife Mar. 22 Ireland Sarah Burns Mother in law Widow 50 do. Michael do. Lodger Un. 28 Coal Miner do. James do. do. Un. 21 do. do. do. I was quite sure when I saw this record that the Mother in Law's surname was Binns but that was before I found the marriage record. So I went back for another look and thought the same but on a third look decided it could be Burns. Anyway, I think we can take Michael and James as Margaret's brothers.
Henry and Margaret are both younger than they were when they married, but regain the couple of years in later census returns.
At that time, Sandyhills was not the large inter-war housing estate but a cluster of houses at the east end of Sandyhills Road where it meets Shettleston Road, east of Eastmuir.
Next door dwelt a family called Connolly with an 18 year old Margaret who may have been Henry and Margaret's bridesmaid and a 6 year old Ellen who married Thomas Dobbin in 1881 then William Reynolds in 1890.
1862 Sarah was born on April 17 and baptised by Fr Patrick McLaughlin in the parish of St Paul's, Eastmuir on April 20 with sponsors John McGee and Mary Ann McCreanor. She must have died young as a second Sarah was born in 1865.
1863 Margaret was born at 10h p.m. on Saturday, December 26 at Baillieston to Henry McGee, Coalminer and Margaret McGee m.s. Burns who married on October 11, 1860 at Eastmuir near Glasgow. Her birth was registered No.7 at Faulds, Baillieston in the District of Old Monkland West on January 8, 1864 by Henry McGee, "his X mark", Father, Present.
She was baptised by Fr Patrick McLaughlin in the parish of St Paul's, Eastmuir on the following day with sponsors James McGee and Catherine Mooney.
1865 Sarah (McGhee) was born at 0h20m a.m. on Friday, December 22 at Douglas Land, Baillieston to Henry McGhee, Coalminer and Margaret McGhee m.s. Binns who were married on October 11, 1860 at Sandyhills, Shettleston. Her birth was registered No.337 at Faulds, Baillieston in the District of Old Monkland West on December 27 by Henry "his X mark" McGhee, Father.
She was baptised by Fr Patrick McLaughlin in the parish of St Paul's, Eastmuir on December 26 with sponsors James McGee and Sarah Dunigan [her grandparents]. This record gives her mother's surname as Burns.
Henry McGee and Margaret Burns were witnesses at the marriage of Margaret's brother, Michael Burns and Mary Ruddy. I note the details here for want of a better place (at the moment).
1868 On Monday, February 24, Michael Burns and Mary Ruddy were married at Eastmuir, Shettleston after Banns According to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.6 at Shettleston on the following day.
Michael was a Bachelor, gave his age as 31 [5 years younger than implied by the 1861 Census entry], occupation Coal Miner and ususal residence, the Parish of Hamilton [qualified by an illegible word which might start with North and end with ash]. His parents are recorded as Patrick Burns, Farm Labourer and Sarah Burns m.s. Milligan, both deceased.
Mary was a Spinster, gave her age as 24, occupation Outdoor Worker and usual residence as Broomhouse, Old Monkland Parish. Her parents are recorded as James Ruddy, Farm Labourer and Bridget Ruddy m.s. Brown (?), both deceased.
The celebrant was P.McLaughlin, Pastor of St Paul's, Eastmuir and the witnesses were Henry Magee and Margaret Burns.
[Michael and Mary made their marks, Henry and Margaret signed.]
1868 James was born at 2h0m a.m. on Saturday, April 4 at Douglas Land, Baillieston to Henry McGee, Coalminer and Margaret McGee m.s. Burns who were married on 1860 October 11 at Eastmuir. He was baptised by Fr Patrick McLaughlin in the parish of St Paul's, Eastmuir on the following day with sponsors James McGee and Sarah Dunigan [his grandparents].
1870 Helen was born in Hamilton.
1871 I haven't tried to find the family in the 1871 Census yet, Hamilton might be a good place to start.
1872 Annie was born in Hamilton.
1877 March 25 Henry and Mrs H. McGee were sponsors at the baptism of John, lawful child of James Ward and Mary Bolton in St Paul's, Eastmuir.
1881 April 3 The family were living at 21 Paterson's Land in Shettleston in a house with one windowed room. [Paterson was a local coal master who lived in Wellshot House.]
