What is a sim only rolling contract?

A sim only rolling contract means a contract that continues until someone ends it. It is unlike a fixed contract where you will be tied in to the contract for a certain length of time. A rolling contract can be ended at any time. Some sim only deals are on a contract basis for so many months then after this time it will become a rolling contract meaning it can be ended at any time. Check when looking for a deal if there is a fixed length of time before it becomes a rolling agreement.

A sim only deal means only a SIM card will be provided - no handset or device is included.

How do I change from contract to Sim only?

If your contract is coming to an end it is easy to change to Sim only. Just choose which deal you want, fill in the relevant details and then pay online. Your Sim will be posted out to you straight away. Once your Sim arrives put it in to your phone and then contact your old provider to tell them you are leaving. If you want to keep your telephone number you need to ask your old provider for a PAC (Port Authorisation Code) and then inform your new provider of this code. Usually your number will be ported by the following day to your new provider.

If you are still tied in to a contract then you will have to look in to whether it is cost effective to swap to a Sim only deal before the contract ends. Sometimes the savings can outweigh the cost of ending the contract early and in that case it isn’t worth waiting for the contract to end.

Can I use my sim card on other phones?

If your sim card fits in another phone it may be possible to use it, however many phones will be locked to a certain network provider. (see sim lock)

It is possible to get your phone unlocked see video below

Mobile Networks can no longer charge you for this if you're out of contract although if you're still in contract or on pay-as-you-go, they could charge you.

Fact it is perfectly legal to unlock your phone.

It's a common misconception that unlocking your phone is illegal, it is not
