A trip with Dave (who did the driving) round the North of England in August, visiting various transport-related attractions. It was some time before I documented these slides and I have forgotten most of the minor locations.
Day 1 - Friday, 23 August - I think we drove down from Edinburgh, visited Beamish (previous visit 6 May 1979) and spent the night at Edmondbyers YH (near Muggleswick).

Day 3 - Sunday, 25 August - Chasing the “Cumbrian Mountain Express” on the Settle - Carlisle line.
"Lord Nelson" was the first of a class of locomotives named after notable naval figures, built from 1926 for the Southern Railway at their Eastleigh Works near Southhampton. It was renumbered 30850 by British Railways but has reverted to its original identity in preservation.

Day 4 - Monday, 26 August - Carnforth in the rain, then we travelled to York where the YH was full so we put up the tent for one night at a campsite on the outskirts of the city.

Day 5 - Tuesday, 27 August - The Scarborough Spa Express - York - Harrogate - Leeds - York - Scarborough - York

|
We started from York behind BR 92220 "Evening Star" (the last steam loco built for British Railways, designed for heavy freight work) and looped through Harrogate and Leeds back to York where the engine was swapped for Southern Railway No.777 "Sir Lamiel" (one of King Arthur's knights) for the run out to Scarborough and back. On our return to York, "Evening Star" replaced "Sir Lamiel" for the return loop through Leeds and Harrogate, but we didn't travel on that bit. Booked in for two nights at York YH.

And on to Scarborough where Dave & I had lunch in a pub. I don't remember seeing the sea or any other of the attractions of Scarborough.
"Sir Lamiel" was one of a large class of locomotives named after King Arthur and his knights, built for the Southern Railway at various locations. No.777 "Sir Lamiel" was built by the North British Locomotive Works, Glasgow, in 1925. It was renumbered 30777 by British Railways but has reverted to its original identity in preservation.

Day 6 - Wednesday, 28 August - I seem to recall that we spent the morning as tourists in York, visiting the Jorvik Cantre, then out to Poppleton to watch the Scarborough Spa Express go past. I presume we found something interesting to do with the rest of the day, possibly the National Railway Museum.

Then it was on to Whitby to stay at the YH before returning to Edinburgh on Friday, in time to catch the "Nithsdale Express" on Saturday.
