Sr Catherine of China

Sr Catherine Rogan, a cousin of Fr John Rogan, was born in Tollcross in 1901. Having cared for her father till his death, she followed her sister into the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. She was eventually sent to Pekin where the order ran a school attended by so many that half attended from 7 a.m. till noon and the other half from about 1 p.m. till 6 p.m. The school had amongst its pupils children of members of the Diplomatic Corps, and this may explain why Convent and school were allowed to remain open when the Chinese Red Army took over the city and the country. Eventually the European sisters were expelled from China through Hong Kong. Some folk may remember the press and television coverage of their arrival and entry to Hong Kong.

After a period of leave which she spent at the order's house in Glasgow, she was appointed to London where she died on 4th January 1983.

These first photographs and card are from the mid 1960s (I think).

The Wards of North America

I have yet to work out the exact relationship here, but I think Mrs Ward was a Rogan. I have found old addresses in Michigan and Ontario.
