The Family of Daniel McVey & Sarah McLean, 1852

My interest in this family derives from the marriage in Cleland in 1888 of John Reynolds and Ellen McVey. Ellen's father is recorded as Daniel McVey (deceased) and in 1891, John and Ellen have a lodger Patrick McVey. This fits well with these McVeys but there is a problem - the marriage certificate gives Ellen's mother as Helen McKillop. However, I have found no other Daniel McVey family in the area so .....

1855 Patrick MacVay died at 2h0m a.m. on Monday, November 5, aged 14 months, at Square, Omoa Iron Works of Irritative Fever after about a week as certified by John Tennant Barrie, Surgeon, Newarthill who last saw the deceased on November 4. His parents are named as Daniel McVay, Drawer in Iron Pit and Sarah McVay m.s. McLean. His death was registered No.99 at Shotts on November 12 by Daniel McVay who signed his name.

Patrick was born in Co. Tyrone, Ireland and had been three weeks in the district. He was buried in Holytown Free Church Burying Ground (certified by John Mathie, Officer).

1857 Mary Ann McVey was born at 8h30m p.m. on Sunday, September 20 at Omoa Iron Works to Daniel McVey, Coal Miner and Sarah Ann McVey m.s. McLean. Her birth was registered No.226 at Shotts on October 2 by Daniel McVey (who signed his name!), Father (Present).

That a coalminer should be employing a servant seems very strange. My guess would be that Mrs McAlister wanted/needed help with the small children and a neighbour's daughter obliged.

Now, the enumerator has made a hash of this part of the record, having added the three lodgers who were originally entered elsewhere. It is possible that all three were living in one household but had to be interspersed where space allowed. In which case, they are more likely to be at No.84 rather than with the Roukes (who might be Rourkes).

1875 Daniel McVey, Coal Miner married to Ann Lochran formerly to Sarah McLean, died at 6h40m p.m. on January 8 at Omoa Square, age 41, of Asthma (years), no regular medical attendant. His parents are recorded as Patrick McVey, Farmer and Elizabeth McVey m.s. Rocks (deceased).
