The Family of John Lynch & Isabella Sneddon, c1858

John Lynch was born in Ireland about 1835, the son of Mary Murray and Patrick Lynch, Farm Labourer, both of whom were dead at the time of John's marriage in 1864. Since his parents correspond with those of Patrick Lynch who married Ann McGee in 1855, and he is a couple of years younger, I am inclined to the view that he is Patrick's brother. If I am correct, then John was probably born in the Parish of Kilmacshalgan, Co. Sligo, and his parents were dead before the end of 1855.

I think it likely that John's first wife was Isabella Sneddon but have still to find the marriage record to confirm that.

Isabella Sneddon was born about 1837 to June Barrowman and Robert Sneddon, Coal Miner who died sometime before 1863.

1860 Mary Lynch was born at 4h p.m. on Monday, June 11 at 18 Coalhill Street, Camlachie to John Lynch, Coal Miner and Isabella Lynch m.s. Sneddon. Her birth was registered No.1021 at Glasgow (District of High Church) on June 22 by John Lynch, "his X mark", Father.

1861 April 8 At 37 Coalhill Street, Camlachie, in a house with one windowed room, we find —

1863 Isabella Lynch, married to John Lynch, Coal Miner, died at 11h30m a.m. on Monday, April 6, aged 26 years, at Lightburn, Shettleston, Lanark of Child Bed after 9 days, no medical attendant. Her parents are recorded as Robert Sneddon, Coal Miner (deceased) and June Sneddon m.s. Barrowman. Her death was registered No.34 at Shettleston on the same day by John Lynch, "his X mark", Husband, Present.

There is an entry in the records of Old Dalbeth Cemetery on April 7, 1863 for the burial of Mrs Lynch, age 26, cause of death Childbed and a fee of 4/-. There is also an entry on March 30 for the burial of John Lynch child, Stillborn, fee 1/6d. [I think this is the father's name and should not be taken to indicate that the child was a boy.] Unfortunately, the records of this period do not include a lair reference.

Mary, aged 11, is John's daughter from his first marriage. I wonder if Bridget Murray is John's aunt, entirely on the grounds of his mother being recorded on his marriage certificate as Mary Murray and the appearance of Bridget Morrow, Great Aunt as registrant of the birth of Margaret in 1872. [See end of section for more information.]

1872 Margaret was born at 3h0m a.m. on Thursday, September 5 at Crownhall, Eastmuir Street, Shettleston, Lanark to John Lynch, Coal Miner and Mary Lynch m.s. John Street was off Tollcross Road down the west side of Tollcross Public School (between Fullarton Avenue and Eversley Street). It was renamed Battleburn Street after Glasgow absorbed much of Tollcross in 1912 and disappeared in the early 1970s.

At first sight I thought Mary had died and John had remarried but Jane's birth details give the lie to that which means Mary must have been about 48 when Jane was born. Perhaps she thought the enumerator wouldn't believe her real age.

1901 March 31 A somewhat reduced family were living at 130 Main Street [on the north side between Dalness and Amulree Streets], Tollcross in a house with two windowed rooms. There were four houses sharing this address.
