Robert Kelly was born in Ireland about 1850 to Ann Broadly and Robert Kelly. By the time of Robert's marriage, his father was dead and his mother had remarried, to a Mr. McDonald.
Jane Reynolds was born on February 28, 1852, in or around Tollcross, Lanarkshire to Ellen Connelly (c1826 - 1896) and Patrick Reynolds (c1826 - 1882). [See Section RS-5-1 for family background].
They had the following children (that I know of) —
Patrick born in 1873 at Cleland, Shotts Parish, married Mary Mullan in 1901 and died in 1926. Sarah Ann born in 1874 at Omoa Square. Cleland, last sighting 1874. Ellen born in 1876 at Windyedge, Cleland, married Thomas McInally in 1897. Ann born in 1877 at Mosshall, Newarthill, married Andrew Keenan in 1901. Robert born in 1879 at Leith, Midlothian, married Sarah Mount in 1904 then Jane Brelsford in 1909 and died in 1910. Catherine born in 1881 at Metal Row, Newarthill and died in 1896. Hugh born in 1884 at Crossgates, Shotts Parish, married Jane Jeffrey in 1908 and died in 1915. John born in 1886 at Windyedge, Cleland, married Jane Jeffrey in 1908 and died in 1915. William born in 1888 at Windyedge, Cleland, married Catherine Larkin in 1913. Joseph born in 1889 at Omoa Square, Cleland, married Mary Eaton in 1913. Rose born in 1891 at Omoa Square, Cleland and died in 1894. Francis born in 1893 at Omoa Square, Cleland, married Agnes Keenan in 1928 and died in 1972. Grace born in 1894 at Omoa Square, Cleland, married Charles Wardlaw in 1912 then James Heyburn in 1922.
1873 On Monday, July 14, Robert and Jane were married by Fr. John McCay at the Roman Catholic Church, Wishaw after Banns according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.127 at Cambusnethan on the following day.
We will ignore the fact that the register entry gives her name as Mary Reynolds.
Robert was a Bachelor, gave his age as 22, occupation Coalminer and usual residence as Biggerford, Parish of Shotts. His parents are recorded as Robert Kelly, Agricultural Labourer (deceased) and Ann McDonald previously Kelly m.s. Broadly. Robert was able to sign his name.
Jane/Mary was a Spinster, gave her age as 22 [she was 21], occupation House Keeper, and usual residence as Cleland, Parish of Shotts. Her parents are recorded as Patrick Rannolds [sic], Coalminer and Helen Rannolds, m.s. Connolly. Jane made "her X mark" on the official documents.
The witnesses were James Hutton and Catherine Reynolds, both of whom made their marks. [A James Hutton was also a witness at the marriage of Jane's brother Patrick to Sarah Carroll at Carfin in 1876].
1873 Patrick Kelly was born at noon on Friday, July 18 at Cleland to Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds and Robert Kelly, Coal Miner who married on July 14,1873 at Wishaw, Cambusnethan. His birth was registered No.183 at Shotts on August 8 by Robert Kelly, "his X mark" , Father, Present.
I did to go back and check this again - but there is no mistake. These are the dates in the records. Married on Monday, gave birth on Friday. Also, I wonder why Robert apparently could not sign his name here when he managed on every other instance that I have come across.
Patrick married Mary Mullan in 1901 in Co. Derry and died in 1926 in Carfin.
1874 Sarah Ann Kelly was born at 5h p.m. on Saturday, December 19 at 14 Omoa Square to Jane Kelly, m.s. Reynolds and Robert Kelly, Carter at Colliery, who married on July 14, 1873 at Wishaw. Her birth was registered No. 11 at Shotts on January 7 1875 by Jane Kelly, "her X mark", Mother.
1876 Ellen Kelly was born at 4h30m p.m. on Sunday, March 19 at Windyedge Old Farm to Jane Kelly, m.s. Reynolds and Robert Kelly, Labourer at Coal Pit, who married on July 14, 1873 at Wishaw. Her birth was registered No. 87 at Shotts on April 1 by Robert Kelly, Father.
Ellen married Thomas McInally at Cleland on December 31, 1897. (q.v.)
1877 Ann Kelly was born at 3h30m a.m. on Monday, September 3 at Mosshall, Newarthill, Parish of Bothwell to Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds and Robert Kelly, Coalminer who married on July 14, 1873 at Wishaw. Her birth was registered No.341 at Holytown on the same day by Robert Kelly, Father.
Mosshall was a fertile place in 1877. In addition to Ann, Catherine Reynolds was born on June 12 to Patrick and Sarah (nee Carroll) and on August 16, Ellen Reynolds was born to Ritchie and Mary (nee Lafferty). Ann and Ellen were registered on the same day with Ellen getting No.342. Three cousins in three months.
Ann married Andrew Keenan in 1901.
1879 Robert Kelly was born. There is the birth of a Robert Kelly registered No.813 in Leith South (District No.692/2) but I have not yet checked the details but I have been told that Jane was a midwife and did her training in Edinburgh.
Robert married Sarah Mount in 1904. She died in 1904 after giving birth to a daughter Ellen. Robert then married Jane Brelsford in 1909 and died in 1910.
1881 April 3 The family were living in a one roomed house at Metal Row, Newarthill.

1881 Catherine Kelly was born at 4h30m p.m. on Tuesday, May 10 at Metal Row, Newarthill to Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds and Robert Kelly, Coal Miner who married on July 14, 1873 at Wishaw. Her birth was registered No.200 at Holytown on May 31 by Jane Kelly, "her X mark", Mother.
Catherine died on August 18, 1896, aged 15.
1884 Hugh Kelly was born at 11h0m a.m. on Sunday, August 26 at Crossgates, Shotts Parish to Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds and Robert Kelly, Coal Miner who married on July 18 (sic), 1873 at Wishaw. His birth was registered No.74 at Cleland (West District of Shotts) on September 15 by Robert Kelly, Father.
Hugh married Jane Jeffrey in 1908 and died in 1915.
1886 John Kelly was born at 3h0m p.m. on Wednesday, July 14 at Wyndedge, Shotts Parish to Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds and Robert Kelly, Coal Miner who married on July 14, 1873 at Wishaw. His birth was registered No.56 at Cleland (West District of Shotts) on August 3 by Robert Kelly, Father.
John was registered No.56, No.51 was his cousin Mary Houston, born on July 1.
John married Mary Agnes Glass in 1910 and died in 1935.
1888 William Kelly was born at 1h0m p.m. on Friday, April 20 at Wyndedge Row, Shotts Parish to Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds and Robert Kelly, Pony Driver at Pit who married on July 14, 1873 at Wishaw. His birth was registered No.45 at Cleland (West District of Shotts) on May 7 by Robert Kelly, Father.
William married Catherine Larkin in 1913.
1889 Joseph Kelly was born at 8h0m p.m. on Friday, December 13 at 55 Omoa Square, Shotts Parish to Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds and Robert Kelly, Pit Bottomer who married on July 14, 1873 at Wishaw.. His birth was registered No.116 at Cleland (West District of Shotts) on December 30 by Robert Kelly, Father.

1891 Rose Kelly was born at 1h0m p.m. on Wednesday, March 18 at 55 Omoa Square, Shotts Parish to Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds and Robert Kelly, Coalminer who were married on July 14, 1873 at Wishaw. Her birth was registered No. 30 at Cleland (West District of Shotts) on April 6 by Robert Kelly, Father.
Five days later on the 23rd, a cousin Jane Reynolds was born just down the street to Patrick and Sarah (nee Carroll). Jane's birth was registered more promptly as No.26. No.31 on the register was Patrick Reynolds, son of William and Ellen (nee Connelly) born on April 5 and registered on the same day as Rose. No.57 is Ellen Reynolds, daughter of Joseph and Ellen (nee McDermott) born on June 5 and registered on June 26.
Sadly, Rose died on August 16, 1894.
1891 April 5 The family (without Ellen who was staying with her granny Reynolds in Cleland) were living in a house with 2 windowed rooms at 55 Omoa Square, Cleland.

All 8 of Jane's brothers and sisters had households in Omoa Square.
1893 Francis Kelly was born at 1h a.m. on Monday, May 22 at 45 Omoa Square to Robert Kelly, Coal Miner and Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds who married on July 14, 1873 at Wishaw. His birth was registered No.80 at District of Shotts West on ???? by Robert Kelly, Father.
Francis married Agnes Keenan in 1928 and died in 1972.
1894 Grace Docherty Kelly was born at 8h p.m. on Saturday, June 9 at 16 Omoa Square to Robert Kelly, Coalminer and Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds who married on July 14, 1873 at Wishaw. Her birth was registered No.65 at District of Shotts West on ???? by Jane Kelly, "her X mark", Mother.
Grace married Charles Wardlaw in 1912 then James Heyburn in 1922.
1894 Rose Kelly, Single died at 3h0m p.m. on Thursday, August 16 at 16 Omoa Square, aged 4 years, of Arcloral Congestion after 6 days as certified by John Lithgow, MBCM. Her parents are recorded as Robert Kelly, Coalminer and Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds. Her death was registered No. 38 at Cleland on the same day by Robert Kelly, Father, Present.
1896 Catherine Kelly, Single, Pottery Worker, died at 7h0m a.m. on Tuesday, August 18 at 61 Omoa Square, West District of Shotts, aged 15, of Acute Bronchitis, Acute Meningitis after 9 days as certified by John Lithgow, MBCM. Her parents are recorded as Robert Kelly, Coalminer and Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds. Her death was registered No.41 at Cleland on the same day by Robert Kelly, Father.
1897 On Friday, December 31, Helen (Ellen) married Thomas McInally at the RC Chapel, West District of Shotts [i.e. Cleland] after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.5 at Cleland on January 3, 1898.
Thomas was a Bachelor, gave his age as 26, occupation Quarryman and usual residence as 67 Omoa Square, West District of Shotts. His parents are recorded as Bernard McInally, Farmer and Maria McInally m.s. Christie, both deceased.
Ellen was a Spinster gave her age as 22 [she was 21], occupation Brickfield Worker and usual residence 22 Omoa Square, West District of Shotts. Her parents are recorded as Robert Kelly, Coal Miner and Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds.
The celebrant was Patrick Hackett and the witnesses were Pat McNally (sic) and Mary A Kelly.
I have not found Thomas's family in the 1881 Census.
1901 March 31 The family were living at 54 Omoa Square in a house with three windowed rooms.
