The Dividing Ireland exhibition, produced by the Nerve Centre in partnership with the Tower Museum, was displayed between 14 July 2020 and 28 February 2021.
The exhibition covers the period from 1912 to 1925 and explores the origins, impact and legacy of the partition of Ireland.
Through objects, archive materials, film and audio recordings, the exhibition examines the tumultuous events of this time period and monumental changes to the political and social structures of the island of Ireland.
The Dividing Ireland Exhibition considers high level politics alongside the social and other aspects of the past in an effort to bring us closer to a considered understanding of partition in history and its impacts on the present.
The Divided Ireland exhibition is part of the Understanding the Decade of Commemorations project, supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

9) John Kelly and Paddy McBride
The two men talk about accidents that happened in IRA camps in Co. Derry during the Truce period (Northern Offensive). McBride tells story of gun going off in a house. This is told in context of another incident where a young Volunteer was killed accidentally and buried secretly in the local graveyard.
8) James Harkin
Talks about the collapse of the IRA in the North in May 1922 and how most people went to Donegal. He never went himself. Remained on the run and was never caught. His wife jokes about he she shouldn’t have stayed with him. It was an eventful start to married life being on the run. His wife (unnamed) also states that the police raids in 1922 were not carried out with proper intelligence and they lifted the wrong people.
4) Paddy McQuillan
Talks about how the neutral northerners in the Curragh were told to join the Free State Army or get out in late 1922.
3) Tom Morris
More pertinent information when he speaks about planning the Northern Offensive and smuggling weapons across the border.
He also talks about retreating across the Border to Greencastle and then moving to the Curragh with his men (claiming he always remained neutral in the Civil War)
Very critical of Northerners who fought in the Civil War. Great quotes about how it wasn’t their fight.
5) Roddy O’Kane
Crossed the border in May 1922 and ended up in the Curragh with other neutrals. Ended up in the prison after a fall out and escaped to England. Critical of northerners who fought in the Civil War. Sean Larkin for instance (executed at Drumboe in 1923).
7) Henry McGowan
Describes being arrested, taken to Ebrington Barracks, then Derry Jail, before transfer to Ballykinlar. This was June 1921, just after opening of NI parliament. He describes Ballykinlar and says that he and others were placed in 6 tents on the beach, separate from the rest of the camp. They called this the 6 counties.
6) The Timmoney sisters
Talk about a women who used to keep a cleaver by the door to threaten the Specials with. She was completely respectful with the regular police when they came to take her son away though. Even cooked them a steak before they left.
2) Tommy O’Neill
Not active in the IRA but was a driver for them in South Derry and Tyrone.
Tells story of smuggling IRA people over the border dressed as a wedding party.
Talks about moving guns over the border at Lifford/Strabane.
1) Thomas Kelly
Time as a student at St Columb’s College pre and post 1916 Rising.
