Plastic Pollution

Hello!

We have heard abundant pledges from retailers and the government over the past few weeks assuring us that Britain will lead the ‘scourge’ of plastic pollution. It seems that the tide against plastic is fast turning away from single-use products - a breath of relief for our choked oceans and waterways.

The 5p charge for plastic bags is expected to be extended to small shops under plans unveiled by government this week as she seeks to tackle Britain’s “throwaway culture”.  In her speech on the environment, Theresa May promises to consult on the removal of an exemption that allows retailers with fewer than 250 employees to continue to give out free bags. The levy on supermarkets and other large retailers resulted in a 90% decline in use, with nine billion fewer plastic bags being used.

Iceland has become the first major retailer to commit to eliminating plastic packaging for all its own-branded products.  However, many independents and small shops have been recycling and reducing packaging for years - here at WBC bags for life we firmly believe that reusing and reducing is much better than recycling - read our blog on recycling versus reuse and tell us what you think.

We love hearing from you so please share with us on twitter @bagsforlife and don’t hesitate to call us on 08000 85 85 95, or email bags@wbc.co.uk

How to lose the plastic from your bags

100% Free Plastic

If you are reviewing your range for Summer 2018, why not consider removing the plastic content in your bags altogether. Softened jute, stiffened jute, cotton, canvas and recycled canvas are all unlined and so 100% plastic free.

There are also many ways to reduce the way plastic is used in labelling and packaging too. Swing tags are traditionally attached using kimble guns and very thin plastic tags. Being so small, these often end up in our streets, rivers and oceans causing significant damage to wildlife. You can easily move to jute twine tied swing tags, the up cost is minimal but the impact widespread. Plus, au natural is totally on trend too.

Bag Of The Month

Founded by James Dobbie back in 1865, Dobbies is an independent garden centre group who were once awarded the Royal warrant for Gardeners and Nurserymen to the Royal Household. Last year, in the 200th anniversary year of the birth of James Dobbies, the company installed a new chief executive, Nicholas Marshall who has ambitious plans for the group.

We have been working with their creative teams to develop products that will expand their offering which includes two stand out fabric bags to be sold in-store across various departments. One is an unstructured huge tote, made of softened Jute, which is 100% natural biodegradable with absolutely no plastic and the other is an oversized jute shopper - ideal for use in large format stores such as Dobbies.
