Big corporations such as Microsoft are helping to bring new ideas and advances in the field of science. AstraZeneca worked with Microsoft recently in the field of cancer cell signalling; developing a “drag and drop” computer model to help fast track cancer drug discoveries by bypassing the traditional laboratory stage. This could help to push forward personalized cancer treatment for patients, and improve survival rates.

This cloud based model, the BioModel Analyzer (BMA), is being used to understand the changes within the cell signalling processes. An advanced computing programme can analyse the signalling processes and predict the effects of signal blocking and drug intervention on the oncogenic cells. Vast amounts data are needed to map out the signalling pathways, but it can be seen as the first step in helping with hard to treat, drug resistant cancers.
